FIV Vaccination

FIV Vaccinations
(Feline Immunodeficiency Virus)

Vaccines are now available for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, which is very similar to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in humans. We recommend vaccinating all cats that go outdoors, and any who have contact with those going outside. Indoor cats with no exposure to other cats do not need to be vaccinated for this disease.

Although FIV is not as common in our area as Feline Leukemia Virus, we do see two or three cases every month. Once contracted, there is no treatment. Infected cats are contagious to other cats, and will eventually succumb to some opportunistic infection. They are unable to fight off minor infections. Most will die within a few years.

Initially, cats must have a negative blood test. They need three vaccinations to start, about three weeks apart, then a booster every year.

One drawback of vaccination is that it will create problems in the future with the test for the disease. Because the test looks for antibodies, a cat will test positive whether infected or vaccinated. Cats entering shelters, humane societies, rescue groups, or foster homes are normally tested first. Positive cats are usually euthanized in order to prevent spreading the disease in the shelter.

In order to prevent a lost, vaccinated cat from being accidentally euthanized, we require that all cats are microchipped prior to vaccination.

Because cats must be chipped, tested, and receive three vaccines to start, the cost is $145.
