Microchipping

Microchipping

Microchipping provides a means of permanent identification for pets. The microchip is a tiny computer chip about the size of a grain of rice. It stores an identification number and transmits that information through radio waves to a scanner. The technology is very similar to that used to scan prices at grocery stores. Microchips are composed of a silicon chip and tiny antenna encased in biocompatible glass. The microchips come pre-loaded in a syringe, and the needle is inserted just under the skin between the shoulder blades where the microchip is implanted. The entire procedure takes less than 10 seconds and is only as painful as a vaccination. After injection, the tissue surrounding the microchip reacts to this new substance and forms a casing. This helps prevent migration of the microchip. Since the microchip is made of biocompatible material, rejection is uncommon and infection at the site is very rare.

Why Microchip?

Approximately five million pets are killed in our nations pounds and shelters each year. Many of these pets are just lost, but there is no way to find their owners. Most shelters scan for chips prior to adopting or euthanizing. Microchips also serve as proof of ownership should a pet be stolen. They are especially useful for cats, which often will not wear collars & ID tags.

Most of us don’t allow our pets to run loose, so we don’t see the need for identification tags or microchips. But accidents happen. Children, workman, or meter readers leave gates open. Children or guests leave doors open. Trees fall on fences. Screens get pushed out. We’ve even had clients involved in automobile accidents with pets in the car. Injured or unconscious, owners woke hours or days later in the hospital, with their pets missing.

Identification tags and microchips are cheap insurance against tragedy.

REGISTRATION

Our $45 Microchip fee includes the registration fee. It is vital that you fill out and mail in your registration form. That information is then entered into a nationwide database, with 24 hours a day, seven day a week access. Should your pet be lost, the chip number can be traced back to you through the database. Failing to register renders the microchip useless.

Should your name, phone number, or address change, there is a small fee to change your registration information. Again, failure to register updated information can render the chip useless. Be sure to fill in the alternate contact information in case you cannot be reached. This should be someone that is unlikely to be away on vacation with you.

We strongly recommend that all pets wear
identification tags and be microchipped!
